The band Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs at the time) as well as bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The group's name was derived from a Latin word that translates to "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every style of music.
In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back was a flop however, they bounce back with their fourth release Isolation that features two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and their tour established them as a brand across the globe.
After a break of few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in the year 1986. It's a change from the ballads of their previous albums and also includes some heavy rock. The album was their first to go platinum in North America.
During the recording process for the fifth album the group loses their manager and is faced with financial problems. They decide to change their name and record a new album with the new producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen departs and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and provides the band with a much-needed boost.
In 1999, the band release Mindfields and embarks on an extensive tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief break, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993. The album features a cover of Weezer's hit song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's performance in Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

In addition to the original members keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.
